Understanding the 3 Most Common Types of Wooden Pallets

When you’re sourcing pallets for your business, knowing the differences between common pallet styles can help you choose the right option for your operations. Whether you’re storing, shipping, or organizing inventory, the design of a pallet impacts handling efficiency and load stability.

At Paper King, we specialize in supplying quality wooden pallets—so here’s a quick breakdown of the three main styles we work with:

1. Single-Face Pallets (Also Known as Skids)

These are the simplest pallet design. Single-face pallets have a flat top deck of lateral boards but no bottom deck. Because they don’t have bottom supports, they’re lighter and easier to move, especially in one-directional supply chains or low-weight applications.

Best for: Lightweight shipments, temporary storage, or environments where cost and maneuverability are priorities.

2. Double-Face Non-Reversible Pallets

These pallets feature top and bottom deck boards, but the bottom usually has fewer boards—just enough to stabilize forklift access. Because the top and bottom decks are not identical, they’re considered non-reversible.

Important note: These pallets are designed to be used top-side up only. Placing cargo on the bottom face can result in poor weight distribution or product damage.

Best for: Common warehouse and shipping use cases where stability and forklift compatibility are required.

3. Double-Face Reversible Pallets

Understanding these three styles is the first step in choosing the right pallet for your operation. We’ll be digging deeper into pallet sizing, materials, and industry-specific applications in upcoming posts—so stay tuned.
